How to Better Train Your Team To Facilitate Business Growth

How to better train your team to facilitate business growth

In the 9 years I've been coaching business owners to earn more, work less, and actually enjoy being in business again, there's one thing I always drive home with every client:

The quality of your business is directly influenced by the quality of the people that are working in it.

Yet building and retaining an A-player team is hard for many business owners out there.

Strong leadership and team building skills are paramount for business owners wanting to create strong, respected, and profitable organisations that thrive through every adversity.

Your team also need some things in place that give them something to work for, clarity on what to do, and the freedom to bring their best self to work.

Have your vision, mission and values in place

I remember going to so many workshops when I was younger, and they were always talking about vision, mission and values.

"Great advice..." I thought, "But I don't have time for that stuff. I need to make money and put food on the table. Teach me about sales and marketing, not this fluffy stuff!"

Honestly, if I could go back and re-do it right now, I'd actually start with vision, mission and values before I did anything else in my business.

Because it doesn't take you too long, but it is crucial for actually building a business that knows where it's going, and can effectively lead other people along that journey.

A quick rundown of the differences between the three:

Vision: This is your end-game. The pie in the sky. It's the ultimate dream you are working towards.

Mission: This incorporates your 'big hairy audacious goals' (BHAGS). Your mission is your goals for the next 10 years that move you closer toward your vision.

Values: Our values act as the compass that keep us on course for fulfilling our mission and vision. They are the morals and behaviours your entire team hold themselves (and each other) accountable for.

Having these three things set out clearly helps get 'buy-in' from your team. People these days don't just work for the paycheck. They want to contribute their time and energy to something that is aligned with their own personal beliefs and values.

Have aligned goals

To really thrive, your business needs clear, specific, measurable goals that your entire team is aligned behind in such a way that every action they're taking is moving you towards achieving those goals.

At The Game Changers, we take our Opulence members out of their business for 2 days of intensive planning every quarter. During this time, we reverse-engineer the projects we need to complete each quarter to reach our yearly goals.

Then we map out the exact weekly steps our team need to action, and the milestones they need to hit, in order for us to successfully complete these projects. And when we stay on track with completing our projects, we know we're also moving towards completing our bigger goals.

Mapping out our goals this way gives your team absolute certainty on what's important, what's required of them, and how it fits into the bigger picture. This results in more clarity, enthusiasm, and dedication (with no overwhelm or confusion).

Train your staff to be 'intra'preneurs

Intrapreneurs have a similar mindset and attitude as entrepreneurs… but instead of working for themselves, they work inside an organization - YOURS.

They have the entrepreneurial spirit, but they're quite happy to work towards another organisation's common goals rather than start their own enterprise.

That's not to say you should hire a team that does their own thing all the time. That would result in chaos!

Intrapreneurs are guided by the systems and processes you've set up in your business to dictate how things should be run. But the problem with systems and processes is that if employees are expected to follow them too precisely, you've just got a team of robots on your hands.

Training your staff to be intrapreneurs means that they still follow the procedures that keep your business running safely and smoothly, yet they are always looking for ways to improve your existing processes and make things better.

Some businesses focus too heavily on the systems and processes and as a result, don't innovate and eventually die off.

Other businesses - such as tech startups - innovate heavily and move very fast… but their lack of systems and processes make their operations a complete mess.

Your business needs to find a happy medium.

Build the right systems and processes that help your business run (even if you're not there)... but also give your team the freedom and incentive to keep innovating and improving.

You can do this by building continuous improvement loops in your business. Have a process, or regular meetings where staff bring their ideas. If approved for rollout, have a system that does this with minimal risk to the business.

Over to you...
