I remember when I first left my last employed job.
I noticed that even though I was unemployed, with a mortgage to pay, I wasn't worried.
It was unusual for me not to worry. But I knew something would come up.
Three days later I had an idea: I would put an ad in the local paper. So I took my last $300 and put an ad offering local handyman services. No job too big or small.
Soon I started getting calls for work. A month later, shit started to sink in that I really was on my own.
I had no safety net of an employer to learn from.
No network of colleagues who could guide me. I had to learn the path forward on my own. Instead of waiting for my employer to hand instructions to me, I had to flip that mentality and go out and seek knowledge.
While this was an important mindset shift, it took me some time to learn about quality of knowledge - did the person I was taking as gospel actually have the credibility to back up their advice?
I quickly learned that information is everywhere. But the quality of the information - and its relevance to my position - varied wildly.
I made so many mistakes on my 18-year journey to building my 'freedom business'.
